Supporting schools in Southwark

Our Wellbeing coaches, the School Engagement Team (SET) offers free support for young people, parents/carers and staff in Southwark's schools. The SET operates as part of Groundwork London’s Wellbeing and Mental Health Service - The Nest. This means that The SET are able to utilise other projects at The Nest and work collaboratively to give SET schools the most well-rounded support possible.

Supporting young people, parents/carers and teachers in Southwark's schools

The School Engagement Team works in primary, secondary and specialist schools in Southwark borough, offering a variety of support for young people, parents/carers and teachers. Our main focus is to; raise awareness around mental health and wellbeing, support with school transitions, and offer support to those identified as at-risk of exclusion.

What we offer for young people

The SET works across primary, secondary and specialist schools within the Southwark borough, offering a wide range of support to children and young people (CYP), parents/carers and staff. They focus on 3 key areas;

Awareness raising: running class workshops for CYP to signpost them to The Nest and other services available to them in Southwark, as well as educate them on topics relating to mental health and wellbeing.
Exclusion prevention: delivering targeted sessions for CYP identified as being at risk of school refusal or exclusion or showing signs of school avoidance. These can be 1-2-1 or group programmes.
Transitions: Facilitating class workshops or targeted programmes with small groups of children identified as needing additional support as they leave year 6 or start year 7.

Topics we deliver include

Our workshops consist of icebreakers, interactive games and lots of knowledge to educate your pupils on Mental Health and Wellbeing. Please find below all the topics that we deliver in our workshops and targeted groups.

What we offer for parent, carers and school staff

Workshops designed for parents/carers/school staff

We offer workshops for school staff on emerging challenges among pupils, so they can feel confident in offering the appropriate support and advice.

We also recognise the importance of engaging parents and carers in schools and can offer workshops for parents around various mental health and wellbeing topics.

Partnerships

Co-production is an important part of SET’s work. The SET manager works collaboratively with each school to ensure the interventions provided meet the needs of the staff, CYP and families. Strong relationships have been established between SET and schools, and they appreciate how much care, consideration and time goes into planning interventions. We also work with partners in the community such as the council and youth groups to raise awareness of The Nest and mental health.

Topics we cover include

Our parent, carer and staff workshops and coffee mornings provide knowledge around supporting their young people and encourage parent participation. This is a safe space for them to access support, advice and socialise with other parents. Please find below the topics we offer to steer the coffee mornings and workshops.
