Attending counselling at The Nest supported Dani to understand the purpose of therapy on her own terms. By taking the lead in the counselling sessions, Dani learned to understand her own emotions and how she could introduce change into her life.
Despite being a high achiever, Dani had lost her motivation to attend school, leading to her being referred to The Nest for school non-attendance. Despite her school attendance waning, she remained academically capable, which further strengthened her belief that there was little value in attending school. Alongside this, Dani was unable to study her first choice A-Level subjects despite meeting the grade requirements for them, leading to her motivation declining even more.
In the beginning, Dani was unsure about the purpose of therapy but agreed that the goal of the sessions should be to understand her disengagement and explore the possibility of her returning to lessons. Throughout all 12 sessions of person-centred therapy Dani was engaged and punctual. Person-centred therapy as a model allowed her to lead the sessions, her counsellor supporting her to realise her capabilities and autonomy.
At a mid-point, Dani agreed to continue therapy. As the sessions progressed she attended more lessons at school, eventually forming plans for the future which included applying for university. By the end of the intervention, Dani said she felt heard and that she valued the support she got at The Nest.
Counselling at The Nest allowed for Dani to explore and understand her disengagement with school in her own way. Person-centred therapy meant that she had the opportunity during these sessions to explore and understand the key factors in her school disengagement, and how to combat these.
